Greetings from the darkness again
Story
A model becomes obsessed with a high-profile murder case. Kelly-Anne’s username on the poker site is LadyOfShalott, a reference to a 19th-century Camelot-themed poem by English poet Alfred Tennyson called “The Lady of Shallot.” The eponymous character suffers from isolation, unlike Kelly-Anne. Quoted in Film Junk Podcast: Episode 957: Alien Romulus (2024). Many of us (perhaps too many) are drawn to the dark side, subjects that tap into the ugly side of human nature that Mister Rogers mostly avoided in his neighborhood. A quick look at the popularity of true crime shows provides evidence of an appeal equal to those that don’t follow the golden rule. Writer and director Pascal Plante has a history of success at film festivals, and his latest film fits that mold: a fascinating watch with a twist that challenges viewers’ own beliefs.
There are many other charges against him, including sexual abuse, necrophilia, torture, etc
Ludovic Chevalier (Maxwell McCabe-Lokus) is a mentally ill serial killer accused of murdering 3 teenage girls aged 13, 14 and 16. He used “red rooms” to film these horrific actions and then sold the footage for a profit. Prosecutor Chedid’s opening speech (Natalie Tannous) surprises us with the details of the crimes and informs us that 2 of the 3 tapes will be presented to the jury. The suspect, Chevalier, sits quietly in a glass cage while court proceedings take place. However, the serial killer is not the most interesting character in this story. Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariepy) and Clementine (Laurie Babin) are sitting as close as possible to the Chevalier in the gallery.
unlike rock stars, movie stars, and professional athletes
We find that his group is common among serial killers… Every day, Kelly-Anne and Clementine take a seat in the courtroom and watch the show. An unlikely and volatile friendship develops between the two. You see, Kelly-Anne is a model and high-stakes online poker player. His high-rise apartment has a sophisticated voice-controlled artificial intelligence computer system. In comparison, Clementine is a simple woman who is convinced that Chevalier is innocent because of his gay eyes.
As the story develops, the psychological aspects grab our attention
He feels a bond with her and assumes that Kelly-Anne shares that bond and faith. Director Plante starts us off like other courtroom dramas, but this one is part dark web tutorial and psychology case study, not to mention cryptocurrency and hacking. Like Clementine, we take it for granted that we understand Kelly-Anne’s motivations, but there’s an old saying when we take it for granted. Kelly-Anne’s stone face rarely shows cracks in her facade, and Plante manages to add tension to online poker and dark web auctions. This was filmed in Montreal in French, although we only have minimal footage of the city. Instead, most of the time is devoted to close-ups of the stoic Kelly-Anne and those eyes that are so hard to read.
It will be shown in selected cinemas on September 6, 2024
There’s almost no blood here except for a single screen shot in a red room, and the atrocities are wisely left to our imaginations. However, there is a rather disturbing sequence in which Kelly-Anne is seen in a certain costume for a day in court. I admit, I had to Google Kelly-Anne’s username to discover that “Lady of Shallot” is a reference to a Tennyson poem. The ending could be described as a cliffhanger (depending on your previous assumptions) and yet open-ended enough to generate a lot of analysis and debate. Pascal Plante played a rather intelligent and complex character in Kelly-Anne.
