Essentially, they manage the land and secure the leases, so they can drill for oil and gas
Typically, a landowner’s job is to negotiate and finalize contracts with landowners with mineral rights in order to lease those rights to the company they represent. Like a foreman on a construction site, they build roads, housing for the workers (man camp), assemble the drilling machinery, and drill the well itself, especially in remote locations.

Billy Bob Thornton delivers his grizzled, sarcastic, nonsensical lines with typical Billy Bob Thornton sarcasm
Even the opening credits are similar in style and cinematography, I guess that’s a Taylor Sheridan trademark. There’s a scene in one of the early episodes where Thornton’s character gives a long speech about the need for oil in every area of our lives, which definitely sounds like scripted propaganda for the oil industry, but nothing he says is false.
It’s kind of funny that the early episodes are sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute and feature ads that feature oil and oil workers
Overall, I think this is going to be a great show, the script is great, the acting is great, and the characters are very human.
