In this supernatural winter epic set in the 19th century, a drunken apple seller must go from scratch to become a hero and become the greatest fur trapper in North America by defeating hundreds of beavers. The estimated budget of the film was around $150,000. Director Mike Cheslik estimated that the mascot costumes cost about $10,000, and the crew bought all the costumes online.. After Watson Beaver "passed out" his mustache falls off & he lands in the snow as he stands up. He wears it again in the next scene despite walking away from it without picking it up. Referenced in Film Junk Podcast: Episode 940: Immaculate (2024). Jean Kayak and His Acme Applejack Written and produced by Wayne Tews, engineered and co-produced by Karl Landwehr. This is the film I saw at the Nightmares Film Festival. It doesn’t belong in horror, but I still wanted to write a review. I should say up front that this is not a movie I would normally like. Watching this with the crowd as the day approached midnight was a fun experience. Co-writer/star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews’ theatrical antics also add to it. I should also include; this was the Ohio premiere. For this movie, we have Jean Kayak (Tews) who has an orchid and makes hard cider. He’s a drunk who just likes to have fun. One day, beavers come and destroy one of his large barrels of cider. Because of this, everything is falling apart and now it is winter. Jean has no luck catching food and struggles to survive. Jean then starts trading in furs. He watches the bearded man kill. So much so that the guy who runs the post, Doug Mancheski, wants him to marry his furrier daughter, Olivia Graves. Jean has an uphill battle to become a hunter and this will bring him into conflict with the beavers in the area. They created an epic dam that holds much more inside. So I was somewhat familiar with what I was going to get here after seeing a previous film from Tews called Lake Michigan Monster. This is in a similar vein. There is CGI and background animation. These techniques are also used with character movements and just bringing this to life in general. This takes a lot of time and I’m impressed with it. What helps is that we don’t interrupt much dialogue. This is sometimes shown as a silent film, we even get title cards. It also reminds me of cartoons where our characters didn’t talk. This looks cheap, but what goes in is a lot harder than it looks. Agreeing with this idea, they tell a narrative story without using much dialogue. The things we see are repeated. I admit that as we neared the end, I was exhausted and ready to head home. But I don’t want to minimize this, every day it gets harder to stay awake as it gets closer to midnight. I’ll say it anyway. This movie is made for a movie theater experience or for people to get together for a drink and enjoy. I can see people hating this. I’m telling you as someone who likes serious and dark movies, this is a palette cleanser that if you just roll with it, it’s a great time. I didn’t even mention that all the animals are just people in costumes. It makes it even better with the antics we see. If you get a chance to see this in the settings I said, be sure to jump on this one. My rating: 6 out of 10.
