American (English) remake of the French series HPI (2021)
Story
It follows Morgan, a single mother of three, and how thanks to her exceptional mind, she is able to help solve crimes while sorting through evidence during her shift as a cleaner at the police station.. Despite its very high IQ, an excellent memory, and an extensive knowledge of arcane matters, Morgan makes a series of basic mistakes in law that anyone who has ever watched a television legal show would know not to do. In the first episode, for example, she obtains a document from a locked safe at the suspect-victim’s law office that would never be admissible in court – illegally obtained evidence.
Or an absurdist comedy like Always Sunny
It also could not be used to obtain other evidence–violating the legal doctrine of "fruit of the poisonous tree" In episode 2 she has to be reminded to wear gloves before handling evidence at a crime scene, and in #3 she removes all the documented evidence from the police station, completely breaking the chain of custody and making whatever she removed no longer exists admissible in court.. Remake HPI (2021). At first I thought this was going to be a comedy along the lines of Psych!
But she somehow does it in a mature way
I mean, the only characters I’ve ever seen Kaitlin Olson play are no-nonsense women with a very sharp sense of humor. If that’s what you like about her, don’t worry, she definitely brings both of those qualities to this role. Although the first episode is all I’ve seen so far, it seems to be a series similar to the aforementioned Psych!
And it’s fraternal twin, The Mentalist
In it, Olson plays a character with an extremely high IQ who also suffers from a type of OCD, where she obsesses over things that don’t belong. She also has a very keen sense of observation, and uses these insights to help the local police solve crimes. This is not a dramatic detective series, but it is not a comedy played for laughs either.
It’s a light action crime series like ABC’s The Rookie and even gives me vibes from FX’s brilliant early 2000s series Rescue Me
The first episode was enjoyable and I hope the series continues in the same vein, with just enough dark humor to be enjoyable, but without turning into a joke.
