Martha: Everyone is in danger, Eunice
Included in Mais Você: December 3, 2024 episode (2024). A Festa do Santo ReisWritten by Léo Maia (as Marcio Leonardo)Sung by Tim Maia. Adapted from the novel by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, “I’m Still Here” goes beyond the book to focus on the Paiva family and how each member recovers from the disappearance of their father (played with deep affection by a shocked Selton Mello).
Supported by a powerful performance by Fernanda Torres as the matriarch Eunice, the film recounts the horrors of the Brazilian dictatorship without ever being didactic or heavy-handed
heartbroken. Focusing on the human aspects and the sense of loss of those who never had an answer to the disappearance of their loved ones, the script becomes more and more powerful as it progresses. All the performances by the young actors are first-rate – a rare feat in Brazilian cinema – but it is Fernanda Torres’ incredibly understated performance that really sticks in your mind.
“I’m Still Here” is a film to treasure and remember
It is gripping and moving without ever being melodramatic, in a masterful work. This is the best Brazilian film in recent years, a gift from director Walter Salles (“Central Station”). Note the brief but powerful cameo by Fernanda Montenegro (Oscar nominee for “Central Station”) at the end.
