film, there were many attempts to write a sequel
Story
After his house is captured by the tyrannical emperors who now rule Rome, Lucius is forced to go to the Coliseum and must turn to his past in order to find the strength to return the glory of Rome to his people.
Musician Nick Cave was brought in to record a version by Russell Crowe and Sir Ridley Scott
His version focused on the more mythical elements of Ancient Rome and suggested that Maximus would arrive in the afterlife only to meet other souls who had yet to ascend further.
In the end, Jupiter and the other Roman gods instructed him to return to earth to find and kill Hephaestus, the former god who betrayed them
From there he is resurrected as a Christian and goes back to Rome with a mission to stop the spread of Christianity until his paths cross with the new Emperor Lucius.
The studio decided not to implement this version, but the script is available for reading on the Internet
The film ended with Maximus being cursed to live forever, and it featured a montage of a soldier who fought during the Crusades, World War II, and the Vietnam War, and eventually featured a modern-day Maximus working at the Pentagon in Washington.
